Home tour! Here’s a look at the forest nursery theme I created for my son’s room, complete with several DIY projects and a blend of new and vintage decor.

FOREST NURSERY THEME
Woodland-themed nurseries are popular for a good reason. There are plenty of decor items on the market that fit this theme, and they can be designed to be gender-neutral.
And who doesn’t just love baby forest animals?
My inspiration for this nursery ultimately came from my surroundings. I grew up near Mammoth Cave National Park and it’s still one of my favorite places on earth. I love the outdoors and wanted to bring a little bit of that tranquil forest feel to Everett’s room.

Here’s how it turned out…

COLOR SCHEME AND DESIGN
If you can’t tell, I’m a fan of dark colors.
My son’s nursery was the largest guest room in the house, so I felt like I could get by with at least one dark accent wall. I chose a deep jungle green (Valspar Royal Pine) and added some more interest with a DIY board-and-batten wall using MDF boards in a grid pattern.

I also swapped the flush mount dome light (aka the boob light!) for this modern semi-flush mount light with driftwood and black accents.
Dark gray curtains and a neutral geometric rug tied into the room nicely without competing with the other elements.

I added more color and fun forest patterns with this changing pad cover and these LouLou Lollipop crib sheets.

THE FURNITURE
The black metal crib is probably my favorite part of the room! It converts into a toddler bed so will get plenty of use in the years to come.

The rest of the furniture in the room was either black or very light-finished wood. I reused my childhood dresser and chest of drawers.
The wooden toy box belonged to my dad when he was a kid, and the bookshelf was my husband’s when he was young. Both had a lot of damage but looked better after receiving a few coats of matte black paint (you can see the bookshelf makeover here).

My nursing station was pretty simple – a vintage rocking chair that I refinished and reupholstered (you can see the full transformation here) paired with this side table with a super handy built-in storage basket at the bottom.
FOREST THEME NURSERY DECOR
These watercolor prints from Moon Rock Print’s Etsy shop were an instant favorite! I placed them in floating picture frames above the changing station and accented further with ferns and mushrooms. Then, I used forest-themed wall decor above the crib and changing station, along with a DIY fox embroidery and a DIY baby mobile.

About the baby mobile…
I made the it with an embroidery hoop, felt, simple forest-animal templates, and felt pom poms. For my second son’s baby mobile, I found a safari-mobile template by Wool and Pine Lullaby on Etsy. I highly recommend it since the creators provide templates and easy-to-follow instructions. They have a TON of themes to choose from and following their directions was much easier than winging it!

Once we moved the nursing station to my younger son’s nursery, I swapped the rocking chair and side table for a fun teepee tent similar to this one. It kept with the theme and my toddler loves playing in it!

So that’s it for Everett’s forest nursery theme. Now, he is two years old, and still loves his room!
