Check out this dinosaur bedroom, designed for an elementary school-aged kiddo with a love for all things “dino” and complete with a geometric board-and-batten focal wall!
So I’ve decided that I love decorating kids’ bedrooms. I had so much fun with my new baby’s Safari-Themed Nursery and my oldest son’s forest-themed nursery that I took a stab at designing and decorating my nephew’s room.
“B” is six-years-old and recently moved into a new house, so to make it extra special, his parents and I let him pick out the theme for his new room and he chose dinosaurs! Dinosaur decorations are super easy to come by, and a simple geometric board-and-batten focal wall gave the bedroom a little extra oomph.

DINOSAUR-THEMED BEDROOM
I freehanded the geometric pattern with a level and a pencil before cutting 1X2 MDF boards. The diagonal layout is super forgiving since the boards can be shifted up or down a bit if you don’t measure and cut to the millimeter (and I apparently suck at measuring because most of mine needed to be shifted to fit perfectly against the wall ceiling or baseboard).
The Georgian Bay blue was bright and bold and paired well with the Modernist Gray on the other three walls. We opted for the board-and-batten as the focal wall instead of a dinosaur-themed wallpaper, mural, or decal in case B changed his mind in a couple of years and wanted another themed room – he is only six, you know. Bedspreads and pictures are way easier to switch out down the road than wallpaper (sorry, Nolan, you’re keeping that safari wallpaper until you’re 18)!
Most of the dinosaur wall art, knobs, and décor came from Hobby Lobby or Target. The bedding was a struggle since a lot of sets I saw were made more for toddlers or very young kiddos, but this Jurassic Park bed set was perfect for a school-age kid. A foliage-covered tent made for the perfect hideout.
